I have now completed five games on the site and am playing in another dozen or so.
First the site and interface(s) are excellent. Thanks to all invloved.
Second - I know this is an old chestnut, but I am finding being different colours in different games confusing. It would help speed up my play considerably if I knew I was yellow all the time. It would help especially when I just have a spare few minutes before I have to go out so that I can move the game on for everyone else.
The only counter argument I have found is the 'let's all gang up on red' may be confusing if red is not the same to all. If you need to talk to the other players to arrange something like this surely you would have the time to check the name of the red player from your point of view.
Would it be remiss of me to suggest a poll on the subject? Am I missing something else?
Third - when I check the 'your games' list it is in alpha order by game and then by name. Would it be possible to have the option to change it to be in 'last updated' order. I know it goes red on my turn, but changing the order would make it clearer if/when other players had made a move. |

this option would be great
with the added feature of sorting in either ascending or desending order
I am one of those people who goes down the list in alpha order
so my games of Tikal may not always get as quick a response as
some Amun-Re games |

I'm with you on this one! Unfortunately the damn progamming types keep whining that it's "too hard" or something. They just don't feel like doing it cuz it's not "cool". It's just another case of the man keeping us down. I'm off to burn Mikael in effigy.
Seriously, it's a great idea that I wish someone would pick up. |

I've said it before and I'll say it again...
I'd much rather the developers spend their time and effort on new games. |

OK - I support DangerMouse on this ---- but only if he NEVER gets
yellow as a color |

I'm just the opposite. I'd much rather have this added feature than new games. |

I must be missing something, but does this mean you would be yellow all the time such that you never play me who is also yellow all the time (and anyone else that always wants to be yellow)? |

Only that from my point of view I would be yellow. You would appear as another colour to me. If you chose yellow as well, I would just be another colour to you.
An additional advantage would be, if you could choose all the colours you see, to help those who are colour blind. They could just include colours they could differentiate (at least where there enough options).
I take the point that the limited development resource should be used wisely. I don't have any feel for how much effort either of my suggestions would take to implement and as the developers are doing it for free they may prefer to work on something else. However if they would not be too difficult they may be worth doing. |

I second the motion to put developers' time into new games rather than colors. I'd much rather have a greater variety of games to play. |

Well actual yes it is a bit remiss....because it's an old Chestnut.
Can I ask if you play a board game face to face (heaven forbid) and you and an opponant both want yellow, do you get confused then and take his moves too or do you do the sensible thing and give each other a proper shoeing in the road outside (the winner getting to pick his bestest colour?).
I relish the opportunity to play with colour-ist gamers because I make a point of insisting on their prefered colour. Just to piss them off you understand, nothing personal.
On line gaming is great but face to face has that little extra je ne sais quoi. _________________ It's not the winning, it's utter annihilation of your opponant that matters. |

I clearly have not explained well enough why I want to play yellow (or any other colour) here. When I play face to face I don't care what colour I play. I am concentrating on that game so it doesn't cause me a problem. On SBW I have a number of games going at once. If I have to make moves on a few games it would save me time to know as soon as I looked at the game which player I was. If I am limited for time this may enable me to make more moves than I would otherwise do, so moving the play on for everyone else.
As far as I am concerned the site is excellent as it is, but I don't think that should preclude us from making suggestions, even if they have been raised before. It is possible that new players have a different angle on things and come up with something advantageous to all. |

Mabiweb just made it possible to choose colors in Hansa...and maybe Samurai...not sure.
However, Mabi did say:
"I have released a new version of Hansa with the change players colors feature. This will probably be the last of the 'old' games having this feature available because adding it to the others would require a lot more work. "
So...if it is a lot of work, I fall into the camp of those preferring time to go into new games. |

Yes, it can be a lot of work adding this feature to an already existing game, though it all depends on how it is implemented.
It's much easier if you plan for it since the beginning, so it could be worthwile to keep it into consideration for the new games.
I would like to add that I did this on my site because I saw the idea suggested in this forum, and it was a revelation to me. I had always assumed that players colors were obviously 'fixed', but once I saw the concept, it was such a logical thing to do! And I agree with Gladitus, the point is certainly not playing with your preferred color: I couldn't care less about my color, as long as it's the same in all my games. |
