Great site guys but one small problem: at this time the site is becoming borderline unusable. I'm trying to do my Reef Encounter turns and when I click on an action I'm waiting upwards of 20-30 seconds for the server to respond (no it's not my ADSL connection). I doubt this is a bandwidth issue. I suspect your servers are simply overloaded.

Any plans on an upgrade?

I'm on the case -- need to see if it's indeed an issue that a h/w upgrade will solve, or something else...

I keep notes Embarassed
last year at this time the site was also very slow >>>
into the middle of December
at times you could not log onto SBW

I thought then that it might be related to online holiday retail shopping

just a thought

Do you write them out with your Napoleon Dynamite pen and store them in your Lord of the Rings backpack too?

I'm leaning toward the shopping slowdown...

It's not just SBW, all my usual websites are slow. Tonight, more than other nights as a matter of fact.

BGG is completely crashed out.

I believe the term they use in the industry is Cyber Monday. This is the largest shopping day of the year on the internet. ...at least that's what Al Gore told me.

I doubt it could be general net congestion; I've noticed it with SBW and not with any other site. Also, more on Hacienda than any other game.

The load on whatever server this is must be pretty tremendous, though - a look at the logs shows 50 games completed in the last 7 hours, and that's since midnight US. Figure a couple hundred games per day, each with multiple players, 10-20 rounds of actions or more, all with images to load, php to process, and Java to deliver.

And a lot of addicts checking their "Your Games" lists every 10 minutes, each view of which requires searching a huge database. I've, uh, heard people do this, that is. Not me. No sir.

Not that I'm complaining - the site is wonderfully designed and maintained, all for free (well, I contributed when they let me).

I might have solved the problem (well, I've at least solved one problem that would have been contributing to poor performance). Please let me know if you see an improvement...

Stargate knows nothing of these Napoleons of which you speak. He writes his notes neatly in his copybook, as he did in his youth in the one-room schoolhouse on the prairie, and he uses a freshly knife-sharpened quill.

Don't you, old man?

I said: DON'T YOU, OLD MAN?

To make your database a bit faster, I suggest permanently deleting all games (and associated actions) that have been abandoned for longer than three months.

You could probably remove thousands of rows from your database!
